On Friday evening, John Razillard, 19, and Jennifer Dooley, 20, died after their car collided with another vehicle in Old Bridge.John Razillard and Jennifer Dooley, both of Old Bridge, were traveling in a car on Disbrow Road at about 11:30 p.m. when Razillard attempted to make a turn onto Amboy Road.

A car driven by Cody Daily, 17, also of Old Bridge, collided with them in the intersection. The investigation is still under way.Police believe Razillard either did not stop at a stop sign at the intersection, or he failed to check for oncoming traffic.

Razillard, a mechanic, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dooley, a nanny and aspiring writer, was rushed by NJ paramedics to Raritan Bay Medical Center, where she later died. The couple, both from Old Bridge, had been Old Bridge high school sweethearts who dreamed of one day getting married.

A Morris County man died and his wife was injured when their car struck a utility pole in Wayne early this morning, the second car accident in New Jersey involving a young couple this weekend.

Jorge Castro, 20, of Pompton Plains, died less than 30 minutes after his 1994 Mitsubishi Mirage struck the pole on Newark Pompton Turnpike just north of McClelland Avenue, around 2 a.m., police said.NJ EMT'S and Paramedics rushed the man to Chilton Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Castro's wife, Amanda Castro, 19, had been driving the car, and suffered lower leg injuries when she was pinned under the dashboard, according to police. Authorities said she was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson by NJ EMT'S and Paramedics. Her condition was not immediately available.

New Jersey hospitals in financial ruin

PRINCETON, N.J. — New Jersey wants to get out of the business of saving every hospital from financial ruin.

In a report made public on Thursday, a commission appointed by Gov. Jon S. Corzine recommended that the state establish guidelines for identifying hospitals in financial distress that are worth helping, and those are that are not.

Hospitals deemed essential would then be propped by state grants and loans, with what the state health commissioner, Heather Howard, described as an early-warning system.

Joel C. Cantor, the director of the Center for State Health Policy at Rutgers University, who is a member of the commission, said hospital boards should think twice about what has become a habit of “go to the governor’s office and ask for help.”

“We’re trying to send a signal that there’s no guarantee that that help will be there,” he said.

The report is not as far-reaching as one ordered by the New York State Legislature in 2006, in which a commission recommended that at least nine hospitals, including five in New York City, be closed. Indeed, the New Jersey report did not spell out which hospitals should be shuttered.

Uwe E. Reinhardt, a health care economist at Princeton and chairman of the commission, said that a specific list would probably hurt a hospital’s ability to negotiate insurance rates and damage employee morale.

But the report did not mince words, saying that a good number of New Jersey’s 78 hospitals were poorly managed and inefficient, and that a “large number of hospitals appear headed toward distress in the next few years.”

The report now goes to Mr. Corzine, and it is not clear what he will do, and when he will do it. For now, his top priority is shepherding his multibillion-dollar plan to restructure the state’s troubled finances through substantially higher toll road increases.

What is troubling about New Jersey’s hospitals, the report found, is that even though many hospitals across the country are doing well financially, those in New Jersey are not; 15 have closed in the last 10 years.

The report concluded that too many hospitals in New Jersey are bunched in the same areas, particularly in the northeast, resulting in a surplus of beds.

In addition, the report found problems with public insurance like Medicaid and the state’s Charity Care program, which, it said, reimburse hospitals well below cost. At the same time, the report noted, chronically ill elderly patients covered by Medicare see more doctors a year than in any other state in the nation.

As a result, the state has frequently been asked, at the very last minute, to help rescue an endangered hospital, often at a cost much higher than if it had intervened earlier, the report said.

If the governor follows the commission’s recommendations, the system will undergo substantial changes. For instance, if the state decides to classify hospitals as essential or nonessential, they will all be defined by certain criteria, like providing care to a vulnerable population, providing an essential service like trauma care or existing in an area not saturated by hospitals.

The cost of adopting the recommendations is not clear. Some of the measures will cost money; others will save money, Ms. Howard said. One idea, for instance, would increase the current 3 percent tax on ambulatory care and other clinics, and use the increase to finance a fund for distressed hospitals.

In a statement, the New Jersey Hospital Association commended the commission for tackling a tough subject, but said that it did not offer sufficient solutions or address options to obtain new financing.

Police sergeant saves man from suicide attempt

A police sergeant flagged down on Academy Street Tuesday afternoon by a man reporting an attempted suicide rushed inside a residence and cut the rope from the neck of a man who hung himself, police said.

Sgt. Anthony Manzo was on patrol at about 1:40 p.m. when a man ran up to his vehicle in the 100 block of Academy Street and said a man inside an apartment had tried to kill himself, police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Medina said Tuesday evening.

Manzo called for New Jersey EMS and ran inside and found a 57-year-old male resident of the apartment hanging from the doorknob by a piece of rope, Medina said.

With the assistance of the man who flagged him down, who Medina did not identify, Manzo carefully pushed the door into the room and cut the rope from the man's neck with a kitchen knife he retrieved from the apartment.

The man was unconscious and barely breathing, so Manzo tilted the man's head back to open his airway and the first aid maneuver led to the man regaining some consciousness, Medina said.

Officer Taja Durling arrived shortly after and assisted in caring for the man, who Trenton EMS rushed to Capital Health System at Fuld hospital. Medina did not publicly identify the victim.A Fuld hospital official said Tuesday night that the victim was recuperating and in stable condition.

Manzo, a well-known 21-year department veteran, is currently the North District patrol sergeant.

5 Car accident kills one in Hoboken

A five-car accident in Hoboken Saturday killed one person and injured at least nine others, police said.

A 36-year-old woman traveling twice the speed limit downhill on a viaduct that intersects Willow Avenue crashed into a car ahead of her at about 4:25 p.m. The resulting fiery multiple car crash claimed the life of the male driver of the car in front of her, police said.

A van traveling westbound on the viaduct swerved and hit one of the cars, police said.

The wife of the man who died was a front seat passenger in the first car that was hit, and was struggling for her life late last night. The nine other victims were spine splinted and collared by New Jersy EMT's and paramedics and taken to Jersey City Medical Center.

It was unclear Saturday night from which cars additional victims were taken.

The woman who caused the crash was traveling about 60 mph down the viaduct at Willow Avenue and 14th Street near the Lincoln Tunnel.

Police did not release identities of the victims Saturday night because the next of kin had not yet been notified.

Investigators from the Hoboken Police, State Police, and homicide squad of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office remained at the scene of the accident late into the night.NEW UPDATE

2 Newark hospitals to close

Two struggling Newark hospitals - Saint James and Columbus - will close their doors this spring, while the city's third Catholic hospital will receive an infusion of cash under an agreement reached tonight.

Officials from Cathedral Healthcare System, which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Newark, voted tonight to accept a proposal from a Pennsylvania company to assume ownership of the financially troubled hospitals.

The deal, which still must be approved by state health officials, will result in the closing of Saint James by mid-March and Columbus by June 1, officials said.

Saint Michael's Medical Center, which was been in Newark since 1867, will remain open and receive more than $100 million in improvements and equipment from the new owner, Catholic Health East of Newtown Square, Pa., according to the agreement.

Cathedral officials said the three hospitals together are losing $6 million a month, leaving them little choice but to make the deal.

Some outpatient services are expected to be offered at Saint James after its closing, but it is unclear whether any kind of primary care will remain at Columbus.

The deal, which does not require any exchange of cash, is subject to the approval of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

The state has agreed to guarantee a $250 million bond to pay for capital improvements and debt reduction, according to Thomas Slater, a health department spokesman.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker said he is "furious" about the shutdowns, contending city officials have not been kept up-to-date by Cathedral on plans he feels are now clearly putting the health of city residents in danger. Booker and other city officials on Friday plan to hold a press conference outside Columbus Hospital, which he said may end up with no remaining healthcare services.

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — Three people were killed and a fourth was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on Sunday afternoon on a New Jersey road with a reputation as a place for drag racing, the police said.

Those pronounced dead at the scene were Maria Leyton, 79, from Fords, in one car, and George M. Ghebrial, 19, and Mena S. Shafek, 18, both of Jersey City, in the other vehicle, investigators said.

The sole survivor, Doris Etchegaray, 54, Ms. Leyton’s daughter, New jersey paramedic and EMT's took her to the Jersey City Medical Center, where she underwent surgery, the police said. Investigators speculated that she survived because of an air bag on her side. There was no airbag on the passenger’s side.

Investigators said they were exploring the possibility that racing played a role in the accident, which occurred a little after 3 p.m. in the 2500 block of Secaucus Road in North Bergen near Routes 1 and 9. They were questioning four possible witnesses, two in another vehicle and two in a nearby parking lot.

Both vehicles involved in the crash were demolished, the police said. The collision involved a speed well above the local limit of 25 miles per hour, the police said.

Drag racing is a recurring problem on Secaucus Road, and police patrols try to discourage it, said an investigator, Lou J. Stitzer. The highway, in an industrial zone that is largely deserted on weekends, is two lanes wide and has long, straight stretches between traffic lights.

Mr. Ghebrial was driving a blue Honda Civic, with his friend as a passenger, the police said.

Their eastbound car crossed a median double line and collided with a westbound Chevrolet Blazer driven by Ms. Etchegaray, the police said.

In another two-vehicle accident in New Jersey on Sunday, a father and his 16-year-old daughter were seriously injured when they were ejected from their Ford Explorer in a collision with a Jeep Cherokee on Route 46 in Passaic County, the police said.New jersey paramedic and EMT's treated the victims and transported them to the hospital

The father, Alejandro Gallardo, was the driver, and his injured daughter was Giovanna. Two other members of the family suffered less severe injuries, officials said.

Mr. Gallardo’s 5-year-old son, Alejandro Jr., was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash but was not injured. Unlike the others, he was belted into his seat, the police said. No one in the Jeep Cherokee suffered significant injuries, the police said.
