A New York motorist died and his wife and son were hospitalized after their car struck a tree in Sussex County this morning, authorities said.

Sotis F. Papagelos, 77, of Vestal, N.Y., was pronounced dead almost an hour after the accident happened on Clove Road in Montague about 9:30 a.m., according to State Police.

His wife Sofie, and their adult son, Agisilas, were treated by New Jersey EMTs and Paramedics on scene then transported to area hospitals after complaining of pain, said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a State Police spokesman.

Castellanos said Papagelos was driving a 2000 Daewoo that was traveling southbound on Clove Road just before the accident. The roadway was wet when the vehicle went to the right and struck a tree, Castellanos said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, according to authorities.
