FRANKLIN TWP. — One person was killed in a fiery crash after a sport utility vehicle reportedly sped through a stop light and crashed into a tractor-trailer at Weymouth and Main roads at about 8:38 p.m. Wednesday.
The crash caused both vehicles to slide into a utility pole, bringing live wires down onto the wreck. The tractor-trailer was empty, but its fuel tanks caught fire. Flames engulfed the semi rig and the SUV, which was trapped underneath. The driver of the tractor-trailer was able to escape harm, but the driver of the SUV was trapped and died inside his vehicle, police said. The names of the victim and the truck driver have not been released by police. Sources indicated at least one home in the area of the accident was evacuated due to the intensity of the heat in the area of the crash. Power was also knocked out at least in the area surrounding the crash site. Forest Grove Fire Co., Franklin Township Ambulance, Underwood-Memorial Hospital paramedics, Gloucester County's Office of the Fire Marshal, Hazardous Materials Team, and Medical Examiner's Office, Vineland, Newfield, Landisville and Malaga fire companies. Franklin and Monroe township fire police and the New Jersey State Police Vehicle Inspection and Fatal Crash units responded.
