LAMBERTVILLE For 87 years, area residents had free ambulance service to area hospitals. That will change Oct. 1 when the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance & Rescue Squad starts billing for transport.

Pat Pittore, president of the nonprofit group, told city council Monday that the organization had put off the change in policy as long as it could.

“This decision came only after much debate. Although we are nonprofit, we run our operation as a business, and as such we need a reliable stream of income,” said Pittore.

He said the squad’s expenses are nearly $400,000 a year and its annual fundraising efforts are yielding only about $150,000.Check the call volume
