Two people were killed today during a shootout in Newark's South Ward, police said.
The victims, both male, were struck while shooting at one another on Hawthorn Avenue, near Huntington Terrace, sometime after 2 p.m., police said.
One victim was pronounced dead at the sceneby NJ Paramedics; the other was treated by EMT's and Paramedics then taken to Newark's University Hospital, where he died at about 2:40 p.m., police said.
Neighbors reported hearing multiple shots, fired in quick succession.
