A marathon session in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newark yesterday ended with Hudson Holdcothe owners of Hoboken University Medical Center, emerging with the top bid for bankrupt Christ Hospital, at $45.3 million.

It was a stunning turnaround from earlier this week, when a two-day auction sale of the hospital ended Tuesday with Hudson Holdco’s lone competitor, Bloomfield-based Community Healthcare Associates, offering a top bid of $40.5 million.

Hudson Holdco, which also owns Bayonne Medical Center, pledges in its bid to re-hire 100 percent of Christ Hospital’s union workers and 90 percent of its non-union staff.

Though the hospital board makes a recommendation about which bid to accept, Judge Morris Stern ultimately decides who winds up owning Christ Hospital.

The 140-year-old Palisade Avenue medical facility filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month after a deal to be acquired by for-profit chain Prime Healthcare Services fell through. A number of interested buyers soon emerged, though only Hudson Holdco and CHA offered bids last week.

CHA declined to comment after yesterday’s proceedings.

The Bloomfield company, which owns the Barnert Medical Arts Complex in Paterson, seemed confident earlier this week that it would end up acquiring Christ Hospital after Tuesday’s auction sale ended with CHA as the top bidder.

But then Thursday, the Christ Hospital Board of Trustees voted unanimously to recommend Hudson Holdco’s bid, which before today’s hearing was about $1 million less than CHA’s. The board said Hudson Holdco “would best ensure Christ Hospital's mission to continue providing quality patient care as a full-service acute care hospital.”

That recommendation led CHA to request yesterday morning that the bidding process reopen, and when it did, Hudson Holdco ended up with the top offer. Its $45.3 million bid tops CHA’s final offer by about $600,000.

The for-profit Hudson Holdco owns both HUMC and Bayonne Medical Center. CHA hopes to acquire Christ Hospital and lease it to the Jersey City Medical Center.
Longer-than-expected lives and lower-than-anticipated interest rates are to be celebrated, but these positive signs of modern life have put a squeeze on a safety net that hundreds of thousands of older Americans rely on.Faulty assumptions about both aging and interest rates have led a growing number of insurers to stop selling what is known as long-term care insurance. This product helps people cover the often staggering cost of nursing homes, home-health aides and assisted-living care.

The latest to leave the market is Prudential Financial. The Newark-based insurer announced this month that it will stop selling long-term care policies to individuals, focusing instead on group plans sold through employers and affinity groups.

Prudential’s move follows another major provider, Unum Group, which said last month it no longer will sell group policies. MetLife, the country’s largest life insurer, called it quits on selling long-term care policies in 2010. The three companies comprise about 30 percent of New Jersey’s $301.6 million long-term care market, according to the latest data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Insurance brokers, advisers and health advocates expect other carriers will leave the field, too. A loss of competition in turn will lead to higher prices for policies, they feel.

"It’s only going to get worse for the consumer," said Michael Papa, founder of Diversified Planning Strategies of Caldwell, who says about 35 percent of his largely retiree clientele see their applications for long-term care policies rejected.

Insurers are leaving the market even after winning double-digit rate increases for long-term policies, tightening underwriting standards and screening prospective customers earlier for signs of chronic illness and dementia that later lead to claims. The state Department of Banking and Insurance, for example, allowed MetLife to raise rates on its most common policy by 20.5 percent in November, and approved Unum’s January request to raise rates by 12.8 percent. Prudential’s last rate increase, of 14 percent, was granted in December 2009.

A man on a diving excursion about 20 miles off Manasquan died today, the third accident reported by the Coast Guard involving the Gypsy Blood diving vessel since 2008.A crew member aboard the Gypsy Blood contacted Coast Guard Station Manasquan around 10 a.m. today to report the diver was unresponsive, the Coast Guard said. The man, whose name was not disclosed, had been diving off the Manasquan Inlet.

The Coast Guard station dispatched a 47-foot motor life boat crew, which included two emergency medical technicians who performed CPR on the diver as he was taken back to the station.

But the man was pronounced dead shortly after the boat crew arrived. A cause of death was not immediately known, the Coast Guard said.

The Gypsy Blood, a 50 foot Evans custom dive boat homeported in Brielle, performs regular dives for groups and individuals, according to its website.

A message left for the Gypsy Blood’s captain, Jim Wilson, was not returned last night.

In 2010, 28-year-old Yasuki Okada, of Princeton, died from injuries sustained when she failed to resurface from a 122-foot dive 15 miles east of the Shark River Inlet, John Lindberg, a Coast Guard officer told The Star-Ledger at the time.

In 2008 a 32-year-old woman had to be taken off the Gypsy Blood by helicopter 34 miles off Barnegat Light when she became unconscious after surfacing from a scuba dive. Francine Sinotski was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she was in stable condition the next day.
